Project Overview
Edmonton Home Services is a hand-curated directory that helps Edmonton homeowners find trusted local businesses for home improvement, repair, and maintenance. Unlike open directories where anyone can list, every business is vetted before it appears, with checks on reputation and complaint history.
The goal was a site that serves homeowners first and sustains itself through fair, transparent advertising. Homeowners can browse 15 service categories, compare businesses at a glance by Google rating, years in business, and location, and contact a provider directly. Business owners can submit a free listing, claim an existing profile, manage it from their own dashboard, and upgrade to paid placement.
The directory launched with 190 vetted businesses and has drawn nearly 2,500 views since the domain went live. A dark, high-contrast design keeps ratings and trust signals easy to scan on mobile, and the site can be installed on a phone like an app.
Technical Implementation
- Astro for fast, server-rendered pages and clean, crawlable category and listing URLs
- TailwindCSS for a consistent, responsive design system across cards, category pages, and dashboards
- Supabase for authentication, the listings database, and both the owner and admin dashboards
- A listing claim flow, where owners request ownership of their profile and the request is reviewed in an admin board
- Live Google Maps ratings and reviews on listing pages, with fallback handling when a business has no rating
- Stripe for paid listing tiers with fixed pricing and promotion codes
- A reservation flow for limited-inventory placements (Category Spotlight and Homepage Sponsor), so capped spots are confirmed before billing
- Keystatic for managing site content without touching code
- ImageKit for optimized, fast-loading images
- Progressive Web App support with a web manifest, so the site installs on a phone’s home screen
- Schema.org JSON-LD structured data, optimized titles and meta descriptions, and permanent redirects to protect search rankings
